HGTV Founder to Receive Honorary Degree at CCI Commencement

Ken Lowe, chairman of the board, president and CEO of Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc., will receive an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Tennessee at the College of Communication and Information’s 2017 Commencement Ceremony on May 11 at 3:30 p.m. in Thompson Boling Arena. Lowe will also deliver the commencement speech to the graduates.

Experts: Trump Not First President to Have Strained Relationship with Press

MartinezRoessnerDonald Trump is not the first president to have a strained relationship with the media.

Associate Professor Amber Roessner and Assistant Professor Michael Martinez, both from UT’s School of Journalism and Electronic Media, say many presidents—and their press secretaries—have at times been at odds with the press.

“While many presidents may have had conflicts with the media, they also recognized that they needed access to each other,” Martinez said. “With the advent of Twitter and the current president, that is changing.”

UT's Sixth Annual Social Media Week Features Experts, Sports Personality

Social Media Week 2017The sixth annual Social Media Week at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will kick off Monday, Feb. 27, and continue through Thursday, March 2.

All UT Social Media Week events are free and open to the public. 

Panel discussions — on topics ranging from politics to sports to crisis management to entertainment — will feature social professionals, many of them UT alumni, representing organizations such as ESPN College GameDay, POLITICO, World Food Championships, the Tombras Group and area media outlets.

Civil Rights Leader to be Honored at CCI's Diversity Banquet

Rev. Dr. Harold MiddlebrookThe College of Communication and Information will honor the Rev. Harold Middlebrook—a pastor and Civil rights activist who worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr.—with the CCI Diversity Award at the college’s ninth annual Experience Diversity Banquet on Friday.

The banquet will be held at 7 p.m. at Buddy’s Banquet Hall in Knoxville. The banquet is a key fundraiser for CCI Diversity Student Leaders Society field trips and other activities students have the opportunity to participate in throughout the year.
